The Thaw in US-Belarus Relations
After years of strained ties and attempts to isolate Minsk, the US has taken a step back. This latest development is part of a gradual improvement in relations, with the US promising sanctions relief for Belarus' national airline, Belavia, in exchange for the release of 52 prisoners.
Sanctions Lifted, But Not All
The Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control has formally lifted sanctions on Belavia and a jet operated by the airline, which was previously linked to high-ranking officials and Lukashenko's family. Additionally, a general license has been issued, allowing certain transactions for three previously sanctioned aircraft associated with Lukashenko and his authoritarian government.
The Aircraft in Question
The license covers a Boeing 737 owned by the Belarusian government, which served as the presidential aircraft, and another plane from the presidential fleet. Interestingly, it also includes a luxury helicopter owned by Slavkali, used for Lukashenko's travel between his residence and Minsk.
A Partial Thaw, Not a Full Embrace
Despite these changes, numerous US sanctions on Belarus remain in place, targeting Lukashenko, his family, and issues related to the 2020 presidential election and Minsk's support for Russia. The Treasury and State Department have not provided immediate comments on this development.
Trump's Role in Engaging Minsk
Since his return to power, Trump has actively engaged with Belarus, sending delegations to Minsk. This stands in contrast to his predecessor, Joe Biden, who imposed sanctions on Lukashenko and sought to isolate Belarus further due to its role in Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The Bigger Picture
Trump's efforts to broker peace between Moscow and Kyiv have been challenging, with him admitting that ending the war has been more complex than anticipated. Last month, he imposed sanctions on Russian oil companies. Reuters reports that Belarus, following its partial thaw with Washington, has been reaching out to Europeans to reduce its isolation.
